Another question was asked on the rigging forum was on, why not make it into a blog. So originally the idea i did on a film called Being Betty Flood, where there was a little hat monster that need to cleanly hide its arms/legs and reposition based on storyboards/animation visions. A bunch of us got this system working. The first thing you need if to make sure the character models body and arms/legs are separate. Next you can use the center of the body control as the aim constraint point to keep the arm pivoting with the contour of the character. The character doesnt need to be completely spherical like this it will work on most characters, I was just lazy modelling the character. Hence Bowling Ball man...
Next i did a simple skin, the important thing here is each limb part plays the part of the illusion.
Use the Maya Shrinkwrap, i use the a selection mask of faces of the character,
You can select the face and shift select body using these settings:
Closest Projection type and smooth and target smooth level.
Finally, You can crank the level of smoothing iterations of the model, the smoother the better. Or simply use 3 key to smooth preview by default is set to 2 subdivisions.
On the movie we also did some shader magic in Katana and Fur Vellum stuff in Houdini to sell the illusion on the big screen.
"Th-th-th...Thats all folks! Reach out if you need anything. Jase
